What is a fire authority?
The term authority refers to two or more governmental organizations that work together for a prolonged period of time. The authority is governed by elected officials appointed by the Board of Directors of the two fire districts.
Why not just merge or consolidate?
Operating as an authority allows us to pool financial resources without raising or lowering taxes in either fire district.
What will the fire authority be called?
We are actively working on a name utilizing suggestions and processes internal to both organizations. We will announce the name once it has been chosen.
Who will be in charge?
Fire Chief Scott Thompson is already serving as the Fire Chief for both organizations. He will report to the six- member fire authority board.
Will the trucks look different?
Yes. As we move forward with a new name and color scheme future apparatus will likely have a new look. It is unlikely that many of the existing apparatus will get updated except for the logo and name.
What happens to the volunteers?
Volunteerism is alive and well in the Roaring Fork Valley! Volunteers will be a core tenant of our organization moving forward. Recruiting and retaining high quality personnel, both volunteer and paid, will remain a top priority.
What has been done so far?
The Snowmass-Wildcat and the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection Districts entered into an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) on December 18, 2017 to form a single fire authority merging the two special districts. The goal has been set to complete the formal applications of the new Fire Authority by January 1, 2019.
How long have you been working on this?
The Districts have been sharing a Fire Chief since 2014. Today, the two Districts share the Fire Chief, 3 Deputy Chiefs, an EMS Chief, a Training Chief, the Human Resource Director, the Comptroller, the Fleet Manager, and 2 Assistant Fire Marshals.
What will happen to the current fire districts?
Separate Boards of Directors will remain-one for the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District and one the Snowmass-Wildcat Fire Protection District – to manage funds that are specific to each separate fire district’s obligations. The new Fire Authority Board will be comprised of three members of each District Board.

The overarching goal of cooperating is improved service to our customers. This includes increased operational depth, cost avoidance, asset management and deployment, personnel retention & recruitment, reduction of duplication of services, and comprehensive planning advantages.
